Grand Tour Ep1 -- Review

Credit: Amazon

Well there was no surprise to people about the changes happening with this series, as they decided to scrap the old format of travelling round the world in their infamous tent. With setting the tent down in one location is bringing us back to the old style of Top Gear we all knew.

The latest episode consisted of Jeremy, James and Richard travelling round Detroit and jumping back to the Cotswolds in the studio tent. It was as immature as Top Gear in the glory days, it was fun and energetic. It felt a lot more comfortable as show than before in other series of Grand Tours were it felt like different bits of shows put together instead of one smooth running show.

This episode consisted of the trio zipping round Detroit in three muscle cars; Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and Hennessey Exorcist, as Clarkson continues to do his duty in saying some controversial. While he continued to scorn Detroit's attempt to reinvent itself as a trendy eco-haven.

There was plenty of tyres being scorched as the trio visit an old Michigan cinema that had been re purposed as a multi-story car park. In which each of the guys try to make the most noise while pulling doughnuts. Later off they go to an abandoned Cadillac factory at which point Richard made a race course, which was marked out using cardboard stands of Detroit's best know rock stars.

"The first episode of the new series of The Grand Tour had all of the makings of a Top Gear episode during it’s prime. The show’s makers have a good idea of what fans want, and if the season keeps up like this, The Grand Tour is heading totally in the right direction. Not to mention the stunning, and extremely ferocious McLaren Senna they had on the show, that thing is an engineering masterpiece, and very possibly the best hyper-car on the road." - Joe Pepper, 3WHEELDRIVE, https://www.3wheeldrive.online/

The jabs and jibes were clearly scripted, but were reminiscent of the old style Top Gear. this contrasts greatly from BBC who have struggled to fill the space that the trio have left. We also saw the removing of the guest celebrity slot. This was done as Amazon Prime number crunchers discovered that most non UK viewers were skipping past as they didn't know who any of the celebrities were. As being some one from the UK myself I didn't know who most of the celebrities were, so it's not just non UK viewers. So I'm happy that this section of the programme has been cut out and will be enjoying the other parts that are shown instead.

Question: What did you think of the new series of Grand Tour?

See you next time
